Sometimes your skin needs a little extra love. Like, for example, when the seasons change, or you’ve been ill, or you’ve had an extra busy week (or four) at the office. If all of those things happen to coincide, you may wake up one morning to find blotchy, dry and angry looking skin staring back at you in the mirror. Which is exactly what happened to me today.
I decided to channel my inner French girl and slathered my unhappy complexion with a generous layer of Avene Soothing Moisture Mask. Friends, this is the ultimate lazy beauty product. All you do is apply the clean, fresh smelling cream to your face and let it soak in. After 15 minutes it is completely absorbed and once-angry skin is left soft and glowy. There’s no greasy shine. No post-mask peeling or scrubbing required. It’s amazing.
To finish off my French-girl facial, I swiped Caudalie Lip Conditioner on my lips. This is my current favorite balm – weightless and silky smooth, it’s long-lasting and makes a great base for lipstick.
Suddenly my skin looks much better and I’m feeling very breezy and chic. Gotta love French beauty.
It has been far too long since my last post and for that I must apologize. It has been a very hectic couple of months and I simply have not had as much time as I would like for fun stuff (like sampling and writing). However, I have managed to try some new products and even finished a few in the past several weeks. Here’s a look at my empties for February and March:
Dove Purely Pampering Sweet Cream Beauty Bar: I picked up a duo of these beauty bars after trying a body wash that left me broken out and very unhappy. I chose the sweet cream version because of it’s light, sweet scent – very feminine but also very mild. Nothing earth shattering here but it gets me clean without the addition of pimples and it smells nice. I’d buy them again.
Dr. Jart Water Replenishment Cotton Sheet Mask: This has got to be my favorite new beauty thing; it’s certainly the best sheet mask I’ve ever tried. It’s drenched in a super-moisturizing formula that soothes the skin and left me looking and feeling fresh and glowy for the rest of the day. Bonus: you can freak out your pets by looking like a serial killer when you put it on.
Make Dual-Phase Eye Makeup Remover: This is my all-time favorite eye makeup remover. It’s gentle and effective, lasts for a ridiculously long time, is a pretty pink color and comes in a cool square bottle.
Lady Speed Stick Invisible Dry Powder Fresh Antiperspirant/Deodorant: I bought this for 99 cents one day when I was feeling nostalgic for the days when I used to swear by powder fresh deodorant. It’s a solid deodorant (see what I did there?) and kept me fresh and sweat-free.
Covergirl CG Smoothers BB Cream: This is not new to my blog or to my empties. My classic winter BB cream, it’s still moisturizing, easy to use and light enough for my ghost-like winter complexion. Still a winner.
Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleansing Cloths: Another empties MVP, these wipes are great for those days when you just cannot be bothered to properly wash your face.
Eyeko Black Magic Mascara: This mascara is quickly becoming one of my favorites. It’s dark and dramatic and lasts all day without flaking or smudging. Plus I love the unique packaging and curled wand. If you haven’t tried this mascara yet, do yourself a favor and buy some right now.
I like the look of gel manicures and the fact that they are so durable, but as a person who prefers to do most of my beauty treatments myself, I haven’t been all that jazzed about getting a gel manicure done at the salon. That’s why I love the gel effect trend, which allows you to paint on your own sleek-looking polish in the comfort of your own home. I’ve been drooling over the Nails Inc Gel Effect line for a while now, so I finally decided to give this hot pink polish a try. I love the color and I have to say I’m impressed with the quality of the polish. One coat, with no base or top coat, gave me even, opaque color. It smoothed out some imperfections in my nails and stayed chip-free for 4 days. It stayed glossy all week and came off easily when I was ready to remove it. I’ll be trying some of the other Nails Inc shades for sure!
Since we’re smack dab in the middle of winter, it’s no surprise that my most recent batch of empties includes skincare standbys and some soothing hair products. Let’s take a look:
Dr Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel Original Formula: This easy to use 2-step anti-aging treatment has been a favorite for years now. It smooths without irritating my skin and helps fight winter flakiness. I was thrilled to receive this little three-pack as a freebie with my last Sephora purchase.
Philosophy Miracle Worker Miraculous Anti-Aging Moisturizer: The only thing better for my winter complexion than the above-mentioned peel is following it up with a generous layer of my favorite moisturizer. This skin-softening, ultra-hydrating moisturizer is my winter favorite.
Davines LOVE Shampoo & LOVE Conditioner: I didn’t love this smoothing shampoo on its own – it made my locks a little limp – but paired with the conditioner it left my hair soft and bouncy. It also kept my scalp moisturized. I’m really not a fan of its heavy floral scent, so I won’t be purchasing it again.
Dove Advanced Care Beauty Finish Anti-perspirant Deodorant: I don’t know about the “beauty finish” part, but I loved the clean scent of this deodorant and it left me fresh all day long. A solid pick.
So winter happened. I’ve been quite happily bumbling along these past few months, thoroughly enjoying the mild weather we’ve been having, when suddenly, out of nowhere, it’s cold outside and my lips are super dry and chapped.
Luckily I recently received a tube of Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm. I’m new to the brand and the balm, but I slathered some on over the weekend and I’m already hooked. It provides instant relief to dry, scaly lips and is incredibly long lasting. It contains an SPF of 25, making it ideal for outdoor sports, and its natural mint and shea butter combo is very soothing. And even though it contains mint, I don’t find that it has any taste or scent – rare in a lip balm these days. If you’re looking for a good winter balm, I definitely recommend this one.
I’m not typically much of a glitter girl. Don’t get me wrong – I love girly glam just as much as the next beauty blogger – I just don’t often find that glitter necessarily “goes” with my everyday aesthetic. All that flies right out the window, though, as soon as holiday party season hits. And if ever a party called for glitz and glam, it would be New Year’s Eve.
This year I’ll be sporting the ultra-flashy, über-gorgeous nail polish that is Ciate Tinsel Town. Photos really don’t even do it justice; in person it looks like I’ve plated my nails in rose gold. I can’t think of a better polish to be wearing when the ball drops, can you?
So Christmas is just a few short days away and you still haven’t finished shopping. Fear not! If you’re wondering what to get the beauty-obsessed on your list, I’m here to help!
If you’re looking to wow your most high-maintenance loved one, why not give the gift of great hair? Drybar’s Peace on Earth Good Hair to All! gift set is sure to make her year.
Great for beauty enthusiasts of all ages, Ciate Pick & Mix lets you create your own 3-piece nail polish set. Ciate is my favorite high-end nail color brand. I recommend adding one of the fun sparkly shades to your set to make it extra festive.
For the natural beauty on your list, you can’t go wrong with the Caudalie Winter Duo. She’ll stay soft and smooth all winter long in a natural, French-girl sort of way. Editors Note: this gift is actually on the top of my list, but it seems to be sold out online, so if you find it somewhere, let me know!
Of course, if you don’t have time to shop and/or need your gift to get there fast, you can’t go wrong with a Birchbox gift subscription or a gift card to Sephora or Ulta!
What beauty gift are you hoping Santa brings you this year?
